What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is a new injectable that was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of overweight or obesity. The weight loss injection is marketed under the brand name Mounjaro.
Its primary function is to promote weight loss by increasing satiety and reducing hunger. It does this by mimicking the action of the hormone leptin, which is responsible for regulating energy intake and expenditure. In clinical trials, Tirzepatide was shown to induce significant weight loss, with patients losing an average of 5% of their body weight after 16 weeks of treatment. Tirzepatide also resulted in improvements in blood sugar control and lipid levels. These effects are thought to be mediated by Tirzepatide’s ability to reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity. Overall, Tirzepatide represents a promising new option for the treatment of obesity and related conditions.
How Does Tirzepatide Work for Weight Loss?
Tirzepatide is a peptide that consists of 26 amino acids. It is produced using recombinant DNA technology in E. coli bacteria. The amino acid sequence of Tirzepatide is identical to the human GLP-1 receptor agonist peptide sequence. Tirzepatide has high affinity and selectivity for the GLP-1 receptor and potentiates cAMP accumulation in cells expressing the human GLP-1 receptor. In preclinical studies, Tirzepatide improved glucose tolerance, increased insulin secretion, and reduced body weight. In clinical trials, Tirzepatide monotherapy improved fasting plasma glucose, postprandial plasma glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in individuals.
